Ili-Alatau - Foto gallery
To get to mountains, mountain-climbers make distant trips by planes, trains or motor vehicles. In this respect the mountaineers of Almaty, the south-capital city of Kazakhstan, are privileged people.
The huge range of the Ili-Alatau, which towers over the boundless Kazakh steppes in a four-kilometre wall, begines straight on the southern edge of the city. On any clear day Almaty residents can admire the view of numerous summits covered by snow even at the hottest time of the year.
An experienced glance of the mountain-climber will at once notice that they have an amazing divercity of Alpine relief, are concentrated in one rather small area and can be approached without a great difficulty.
“You walk on gold”, Norgey Tenzing, the first conqueror of Everest, figuratively characterised the area of Ili Alatau that adjoins Almaty.
